Forty seconds into locker-room interview, Logan Mankins uses Bill Belichick-type quote to describe the state of the Buccaneers. Classic Belichick.
During last night’s Falcons-Bucs game, I saw an image of Mankins slouching forward on the bench. It was probably sometime in the third quarter. He might have been resting and recovering from a knee injury or just bored out of his mind because his team was getting crushed. For a moment I felt bad and thought to myself, “Man, this guy must be absolutely mad beyond belief at the Patriots.” After all, New England played hard ball a couple of years ago during their negotiations with Mankins, and then they asked him to take a pay cut this year. The Patriots being the Patriots, of course. So, when he pretty much said “screw you” to Belichick and his militia of men they trade him to the lowly Bucs.
Tough life, I thought…until…
A friend reminded me that Mankins is also a hard-ball negotiator himself. This off season, he could have taking a pay cut so he could play for a winning team and retire a Patriot. He knew what would happen if he didn’t take that cut. The writing was on the wall, and now he’s down in Tampa blocking for the now injured Josh McCown. I get it, it’s all about the money, the money, the money. Mankings probably doesn’t care and goes home, sits on his barrel of hay and throws back a few Coors. Yet, based on the audio above and the video here, it’s hard to believe that in the back of his mind, and after he queued his inner Bill Belichick and replied, “We have to do a better job, offense, defense, special teams,” that he doesn’t wish he was kicking back a few Michelobs with Brady and company.
